The will of Christopher Codrington III (who died on April 7, 1710) left the family plantations to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel for a college of medicine and divinity. A grammar school opened in 1745 and the college opened in 1830. Legal control passed to a local Board of Trustees in 1983. The college, now an Anglican seminary, is an affiliated institution of the University of the West Indies.
